Privacy Policy

VietPhrase (vietphrase.app) is a free Chinese-Vietnamese translation tool available as a web app, as browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox, and as an iOS app with a Safari extension (see the separate Safari privacy policy). Việt Phrase, Hán Việt, and Mặc Hi translation run on your device.

Data We Collect

We do not intentionally collect or store your translation content on our servers. Dictionaries, books, reading progress, and saved translations are stored locally on your device using IndexedDB and localStorage. The web translator's modes run in your browser and do not send the text being translated to VietPhrase or to any third-party translation service.

Google Drive Integration

If you choose to enable Cloud Sync, the app requests access to Google Drive's app-specific folder (drive.appdata scope). This allows the app to:

• Store and retrieve your sync data (books, reading progress, settings, custom phrases) in a hidden app folder on your Google Drive
• This folder is only accessible by VietPhrase and is not visible in your Drive

We do not access, read, or modify any other files in your Google Drive. The access token is stored locally on your device and is never sent to any third-party server.

Gemini Developer API in Writer and Play

Gemini Developer API (AI Studio) is an optional bring-your-own-credential feature. If you use an AI Studio key or authorization key, it is stored locally in your browser and sent directly to Google in the x-goog-api-key request header. If you choose Google OAuth, the Google Cloud quota project ID is stored locally, while the cloud-platform access token is kept only in JavaScript memory and is discarded when the page is reloaded or you disconnect.

Gemini prompts are sent directly from your browser to generativelanguage.googleapis.com; they do not pass through VietPhrase or Cloudflare. Google processes these requests under the credential, account, and quota project you selected.

Vertex AI in Writer and Play

Vertex AI is an optional bring-your-own-key feature. Your Google Cloud project ID, location, selected model, and authorization-key setting are stored locally in your browser. If you choose Google OAuth, the cloud-platform access token is kept only in JavaScript memory and is discarded when the page is reloaded or you disconnect.

Because Vertex AI's streaming endpoint is not called directly by these browser pages, the prompt and your chosen credential are sent to a same-origin Cloudflare Pages Function and immediately forwarded to Google Vertex AI. The application code does not persist or log the prompt, authorization key, or OAuth token. Google processes Vertex AI requests under the Google Cloud project and account you selected.

Browser Extension (Chrome & Firefox)

The VietPhrase browser extension (Chrome and Firefox) translates Chinese text on any website you visit. The following applies specifically to the extension:

• Host permissions (<all_urls>) — The extension requires access to all websites to inject a content script that detects and translates Chinese text. It does not collect, read, or transmit any personal data or page content beyond the Chinese text segments being translated.
• Offline mode — In Offline mode, all translation happens locally on your device using imported dictionaries. No network requests are made.
• API / Hybrid mode — In these modes, Chinese text segments are sent to the configured translation server (sangtacviet.com and variants) for translation. No user identifiers, cookies, or personal data are attached to these requests.
• Sample dictionaries — When you import sample dictionaries, files are downloaded from vietphrase.pages.dev (Cloudflare Pages). No user data is sent during this process.
• Local storage — Dictionary data, custom phrases, and preferences are stored locally using IndexedDB and chrome.storage.local. Nothing is synced externally unless you explicitly use cloud sync features in the web app.
• Bundled dictionaries and updates (Firefox) — The Firefox add-on ships its dictionary files inside the package, so translation works offline right after installation. It fetches https://vietphrase.app/dicts/manifest.json to check for a newer dictionary release; dictionary files are downloaded only when you click Update. In line with Firefox's data-collection consent, the add-on declares "Website content" because, in Hybrid and API modes, the Chinese text segments of the page are sent to the translation server to be translated. Nothing else is collected.

Safari Extension (iOS / iPadOS)

The App Store version of VietPhrase (an iOS app containing a Safari web extension) is dictionary-only: it has no API or Hybrid mode, so no page content, pasted text or file content ever leaves the device. Its only network connection is the dictionary release check at https://vietphrase.app/dicts/manifest.json; dictionary files are downloaded only when you tap Update or import a sample dictionary. Third-Party Services

• Google Identity Services — used for OAuth authentication when you enable Cloud Sync or explicitly connect Gemini Developer API / Full Vertex AI in Writer/Play (web app only)
• Google Fonts — font files are loaded from Google's CDN
• Translation servers (sangtacviet.com and variants) — used in API and Hybrid mode to translate text. Only Chinese text segments are sent; no personal data is included
• Cloudflare Pages (vietphrase.pages.dev) — hosts the web app and sample dictionary files, and relays optional Vertex AI requests to Google without application-level storage or logging

Data Storage

All app data is stored locally in your browser:

• Dictionaries and custom phrases — IndexedDB
• Books and reading progress — IndexedDB
• Settings and preferences — localStorage

You can delete all data at any time by clearing your browser's site data for this domain.
