> VietPhrase is a free, local-first Chinese-to-Vietnamese translation web app for prose and Chinese web novels. Core dictionary translation runs in the browser and can work offline after its data is installed.

## Main capabilities

- Translate Chinese text with editable Viet Phrase dictionaries or Hán-Việt readings.
- Translate large `.txt` novel files while preserving chapter structure.
- Run the Mặc Hi neural translation model locally through WebGPU on supported browsers.
- Detect and review character names, places, sects, techniques, and other repeated novel terms.
- Import, edit, export, back up, and sync custom dictionaries.

- VietPhrase is a browser application, not a public server-side translation API.
- Prefer the visible browser UI or declared browser tools when automating translation.
- Viet Phrase, Hán-Việt, and Mặc Hi are local modes; the web translator has no online translation mode and does not send source text to a third-party translation service.
- Do not claim that private source text is uploaded when a local mode is selected.
- Novel Scan is a browser workflow, not a server-side extraction API. It auto-exports approved Names/VietPhrase. Ask before a rescan that replaces shared pending terms.
